The 2023 Australian Backgammon Open

  • $100 entry + optional $50 and $100 side pools.
  • The 2023 Australian Backgammon Masters

  • $300 entry + optional $200 side pool. No rebuys.
  • The 2023 Australian Speedgammon Championship

  • $50 entry, rebuys until field is full.
  • The 2023 Australian Doubles Tournament

  • $20 entry, $20 optional side pool plus FREE re-entry until field is full.

  • Important Information


  • 100% of entry fees returned as cash prizes.
  • All entry fees to be paid in cash on the day unless paid prior (NO EFTPOS sorry).
  • Please bring your own board and clock if you can. No boards with hard (ie noisy) surfaces please!
  • Doubles teams must pre-register and be available to play starting 1PM Friday.
  • No Open/Speed rebuys on Friday night; players may rebuy on Saturday if space permits.
  • Sunday Special is open to all players who have not cashed in the Open, Masters, Speed or Doubles tournaments.
  • All tournament matches (except Doubles) will be entered into the ANZBGF ratings system.
  • All tournament matches will be played using ANZBGF Rules. All players should familiarise themselves with the rules here. Hard copies will be available at the tournament.
  • Precision Dice are Preferred in all tournaments. A set of precision dice consists of 4 dice, same size, 2 colours.
  • Clocks are Mandatory in all tournaments except the 2 Point Blitz and the Sunday Special tournament.
  • Baffle Boxes are Preferred in all tournaments. Please bring your own Baffle Box or Dice Tower.
  • Always check with the desk before leaving the playing area for any length of time. Penalty points may apply to players arriving late for a scheduled match.
  • Breaks: One 5 minute break per player for matches of 7 or more points. No breaks (except essential comfort breaks) for shorter matches.
  • Meals may not be consumed in the playing area (hotel rule).
  • Once-off $20 registration fee applies to all players.

    Points and clock settings

  • All clock settings are 90 seconds per point, rounded up, 12 second delay unless otherwise noted:
  • Open Qualifying Rounds 1/2: 9 point matches (14 minutes), Q3 (Fighters bracket): 7 point matches (11 minutes).
  • Open Main Rounds 1-6: 11/11/11/13/13/15 point matches (17/17/17/20/20/23 minutes).
  • Open satellites: 7 point matches, clocks preferred.
  • Last Chance: 5 point matches, 7 point final (8/11 minutes).
  • Masters Rounds 1-4: 11/11/13/13/15 points (17/17/20/20/23 minutes).
  • Masters satellites: 9 point matches, clocks preferred (14 minutes).
  • Speedgammon: 7 point matches, clocks at 3 minutes total with 12 second delay.
  • Speedgammon satellites: 5 point matches, clocks preferred (3 minutes).
  • Doubles Tournament: 7 point matches, 9 point Final, clocks at 11/14 minutes with 20 second delay.
  • 2 Point Blitz: 2 point matches with doubling cube, no clocks.
  • Sunday Special: 5 point matches, 7 point final, clocks optional (8/11 minutes).
  • Venue

    The Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach is a luxury international hotel situated in the heart of Broadbeach. The Australian Backgammon Championships will take place in the Sorrento room on the 3rd floor. Sofitel have provided an initial allocation of 20 rooms starting at $259 (room only, 2 guests). This is a saving of more than 20% off the published (and online) room rates for that weekend ($331). Further rooms will be made available subject to availability. The offer expires 30 days before the event, after which standard rates will apply.

    Travel by air

    Broadbeach is on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The closest airport is Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta (OOL). Buses, taxis or Ubers will transfer you between the airport and your accommodation. If you have to fly to Brisbane (BNE) Airport, there is a train service direct to the Gold Coast but it takes a couple of hours and you will need to transfer to the Gold Coast tram service at Helensvale if you are staying in Broadbeach or anywhere on the coast. Note that the tram service terminates at Broadbeach.

    Travel by road

    From the north, take the M1 Exit 77 (Merrimac) all the way to the Gold Coast Highway, turn left and then right on to Victoria Avenue. Take the first right on to Surf Parade and Sofitel is on your left.
    From the south, take the M1 Exit 87 (Southport Burleigh Rd). Turn right on to Hooker Boulevard towards Broadbeach. At the Gold Coast Highway, turn left and then right on to Victoria Avenue. Take the first right on to Surf Parade and Sofitel is on your left.

    Parking

    Sofitel guests can park in the hotel ($25/day, bookings essential). Public parking is available at the Oasis shopping center adjacent to the hotel, entry via Charles Avenue. For a multi day pass, go here: Oasis Car Park then select "Subscription Parking" then "Flexi-Parking". Fill out the form and they'll get in touch to issue you parking vouchers.
