The 2023 Australian Backgammon Open
The most coveted crown in Australian backgammon - the one everybody wants to win!
Two entry options - Friday night or Saturday morning.
Rebuys, if available, will be open at the completion of the qualifying phase on Saturday.
Players may enter none, one or both side pools. The highest placed player in each side pool will win that pool. In the event of ties, the pool will be split evenly between the tied players.
The Open format is double elimination with a separate Last Chance. Players who win their first two matches advance to the round of 64 in the main tournament. Players who lose their first two matches will go to the Last Chance tournament. Players who win one/lose one will play off in the Fighters Bracket - winners will advance to the main round of 64, losers will play in the Last Chance.
Top 8 in the main tournament will cash, 1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th will also receive trophies.
Top 4 in the Last Chance will cash, 1st and 2nd will also receive trophies.
The 2023 Australian Backgammon Masters
The high rollers tournament, not for the faint-hearted. After a day of backgammon in the Open and Speedgammon, those with stamina, fortitude and deep pockets will get the Australian Masters under way.
Masters satellites will be run on Friday evening, $80 entry to field of four or $40 entry to field of 8.
Top 4 will cash, 1st and 2nd will also receive trophies. NO rebuys, byes will be awarded if necessary.
The 2023 Australian Speedgammon Championship
Fast and furious, this tournament is for quick thinkers.
Two entry options - Friday night or Saturday morning.
Rebuys will be open from approx 2PM Saturday.
Top 4 will cash, 1st and 2nd will also receive trophies.
The 2023 Australian Doubles Tournament
2 Point Blitz
A new tournament this year for social/casual players or those waiting on their other tournament matches. Open to all, no clocks.
Top 2 will cash, trophy for winner.

The Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach is a luxury international hotel situated in the heart of Broadbeach. The Australian Backgammon Championships will take place in the Sorrento room on the 3rd floor. Sofitel have provided an initial allocation of 20 rooms starting at $259 (room only, 2 guests). This is a saving of more than 20% off the published (and online) room rates for that weekend ($331). Further rooms will be made available subject to availability. The offer expires 30 days before the event, after which standard rates will apply.

Travel by air
Broadbeach is on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The closest airport is Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta (OOL). Buses, taxis or Ubers will transfer you between the airport and your accommodation. If you have to fly to Brisbane (BNE) Airport, there is a train service direct to the Gold Coast but it takes a couple of hours and you will need to transfer to the Gold Coast tram service at Helensvale if you are staying in Broadbeach or anywhere on the coast. Note that the tram service terminates at Broadbeach.
Travel by road
From the north, take the M1 Exit 77 (Merrimac) all the way to the Gold Coast Highway, turn left and then right on to Victoria Avenue. Take the first right on to Surf Parade and Sofitel is on your left.
From the south, take the M1 Exit 87 (Southport Burleigh Rd). Turn right on to Hooker Boulevard towards Broadbeach. At the Gold Coast Highway, turn left and then right on to Victoria Avenue. Take the first right on to Surf Parade and Sofitel is on your left.
Parking
Sofitel guests can park in the hotel (fees may apply). Public parking is available at the Oasis shopping center adjacent to the hotel, entry via Charles Avenue.
